You can drive to within an 800m walk of the crater of Vesuvius. My 4 year old easily managed the climb and it cost only 6 Euros per adult. The car park is an extra 2 and a half Euros. Views from the top are spectacular. more

If you have the time, it is surprisingly easy to get to the top of this world-famous volcano. From the car and bus park situated well up the mountain, a well-defined trail leads up to the crater an along the rim. You can drive a good way up the mountain - just follow the road, its not very well signed, and you reach a car park where lots of tourist coaches park. I imagine that the view from Vesuvio is great. It was very hazy when we visited, and so the views were not so expansive (we couldn't see Pompeii), but still worth the effort.
