Probably worthy of all the good comments already stated by other reviewers, especially the pool, rooms and view. What made it even more appealing was the availability of the sunloungers, free towels and parasols - no fighting for them at 6am! Even during peak times the pool attendedant provided more parasols. But there were some issues: there is building work surrounding the hotel. It is not intrusive but you do hear the noise of the cranes which start at 8am and continue all day. There is also a lot of building work on the road leading to the hotel which is quite unsightly. The website for the Pestana indicates that "every unit comes with separate shower cubicle and bath". Well my room didn't! Although this wasn't a problem to us it could have been to a less mobile person. Finally, we had a theft from our room during our stay. My partner left a small rucksack on the bed when we went out (with the room secured); it contained a small amount of money, sunglasses and lighter. We believe the theft took place when the room was being cleaned (not the maid but a passing opportunist thief). When we returned it was missing. The hotel management initially did not believe us, but it turned up - minus money, dumped behind the stage. We did take photographs of the rooms with doors wide open and unattended while being cleaned - so be aware!! I would recommend this hotel for its sheer luxury but certainly our holiday was spoilt by these events. Another word of warning - take plenty of sunscreen, maderia does get very hot!
